Jay-Z Explains Canceled ATL Concert....

Posted by Chrisbydemand On 5:46 PM 1 comments
Here's the explanation for the canceled Jay-Z concert in Atlanta this past weekend...

"Fans hoping to see Jay-Z and Ciara over the weekend in Atlanta were forced to take a rain check, literally. The concert was scheduled to take place at Chastain Park Amphitheater Sunday night. Extreme weather conditions including thunder and severe lightning made it impossible for the show to happen and the concert was called off. Speculation circulated as fans wondered if the Jigga man even made it into town. There were reports that his private jet was grounded in New York and that he couldn't make it because of the weather conditions. In an effort to clear the confusion, Jay called into V-103 Atlanta's Ryan Cameron show. He explained to Cameron that he was in town and was in the dressing room before deciding to pull the plug.

"I actually came up to the venue...walked into the dressing room and everything. Soon as I got there it was a big pow-wow, the meeting and everybody was tryna to figure out what's the movements and they said this storm is going to last another 2 or 3 hours, and it's lightning and I was like man that's dangerous. Let's just cancel it right now man."

He then went on to deny rumors that the show would not be rescheduled.

"We looking at some dates in August to come back and do it."

Feeling better having cleared his name, Jay joked around that he was upset with JD and Jeezy for the inclement weather.

"Jermaine called me and I had him meet me in one of those parking lots by there, then he took me over to his house and the excitement was crazy....everyone was calling and I spoke to Jeezy as well. I was upset at them that they let it rain on me. If they came to my town I wouldn't let that happen. I got control over such things..."

The southern (Atlanta) rapper who was supposed to be Grand Hustle's biggest find, only to get dropped from the label because of his past with the law, has denied that his new song was directed at his former boss, T.I...

"Alfamega is denying that his new song is directed at T.I. Over the weekend a song by the ex- Grand Hustle rapper was released called "I Apologize." A statement was released as well explaining the intentions of the song.

"This song, is an apology to anyone from age 8 to 80, that's affiliated with or in any gang," he wrote. "To every parent (mother or father) that has lost a child to gang violence, every sister, brother, aunt, uncle, cousin, partner or whomever that has lost a loved one or a friend to gang violence either by death or prison. Even if I never met you or have known you personally, I want to apologize for being the root of the evil that is plaguing the youth of today, & I beg you for forgiveness the same way i would beg GOD to forgive me for every sin that i have committed, because i am 37 years old now, & i have finally become to realize by watching my own children that i wasn't teaching something positive i was only teaching negatively.

Sincerely yours,
Alfamega

P.S. I would like to end by saying, "Violence Only Begots Violence", let's move to a more positive direction & I sincerely, hope that people understand me & what I am trying to say in this song. GOD BLESS US ALL."

Despite Alfamega's statement, rumors quickly surfaced speculating that the song was aimed at his old boss and Grand Hustle frontrunner, T.I. In an attempt to clear his name, a rep for the rapper spoke out.

"It had nothing to do with T.I. in no way, shape or fashion. I Apologize' was recorded earlier this year before any of the current situations came about. Alfa is out of jail. He is still recovering from his injuries and working to the best of his abilities right now."

The rapper broke his ankle in April after jumping off a 25 foot garage running from police. He was captured and charged with felony gun and obstruction charges. In May he was dropped from Grand Hustle after being outed by the Smoking Gun as a former DEA informant."

Mexico identifies 12 slain as federal agents

Posted by Chrisbydemand On 4:27 PM 0 comments
Twelve people tortured and killed in a cartel-plagued Mexican state were federal agents investigating organized crime, the government said Tuesday, marking one of the boldest attacks on federal forces since President Felipe Calderon launched his war on drugs.

Mexico's national security spokesman, Monte Alejandro Rubido, said the 11 men and one woman were off duty when they were ambushed and abducted by members of the La Familia drug cartel in Calderon's home state of Michoacan, which has been a center of his crackdown on drug traffickers.

Their bodies were found piled up along a mountain highway late Monday near the town of La Huacana. Michoacan state prosecutor J. Jesus Montejano initially said Tuesday that they were soldiers, but the army denied that.

Initial reports indicated the victims were likely killed over the weekend, when federal agents arrested Arnoldo Rueda Medina, a reputed chief of operations of the Michoacan-based La Familia cartel.

Police say his arrest Saturday set off a string of brazen attacks against federal forces that left six federal police officers and two soldiers dead. Gunmen threw grenades and fired on federal police stations and hotels where the agents were staying in three states.

"This marks an important change in the drug war in that they are attacking federal forces directly," said Jorge Chabat, a Mexican drug expert. "It also suggests the capture of this person has affected the operations of the cartel. It was a major blow and this is a reaction out of weakness not strength."

Federal forces arrested politicians in several Michoacan cities, including La Huacana, during an unprecedented sweep in May against local officials believed to be cooperating with drug traffickers. Seven mayors, one former mayor and the state prosecutor remain jailed on charges of protecting the La Familia cartel.

Rubido said Tuesday that an arrest warrant for alleged links to La Familia has been issued for Julio Godoy, half brother of Michoacan state Gov. Leonel Godoy and a federal lawmaker for the leftist Democratic Revolution Party, or PRD.

Julio Godoy, who has gone into hiding, is allegedly one of several people in charge of seeking government protection for the cartel, Rubido told a news conference in Mexico City. Julio Godoy was elected to Congress a week ago.

A PRD spokesman said the party wouldn't comment on the case.

"Any person from Michoacan who is responsible for a crime has to face the consequences and if they are innocent they also should get a fair process," Leonel Godoy said in Mexico City after meeting with federal Attorney General Eduardo Medina-Mora.

A former Green Party congressional candidate from Michoacan state has also been accused of collaboration with La Familia, Rubido said.

Since Calderon took office in December 2006, he has sent more than 45,000 troops to drug hot spots. More than 11,000 people have been killed in drug violence.

Michoacan, located on Mexico's western coast, has been wracked by a wave of killings and arrests in recent weeks. Federal forces there are fighting La Familia, which is locked in a battle with the Zetas drug hit men, who form a branch of the Gulf cartel. On Tuesday, three bodies were found in the town of Nuevo Urecho.

In the northern state of Chihuahua, meanwhile, gunmen killed the mayor of the town of Namiquipa, officials said.

Hector Mixueiro was driving his pickup truck near Namiquipa when gunmen opened fire Tuesday. A message left on a Ciudad Juarez bridge hours earlier threatened Mixueiro saying he had helped soldiers arrest 25 gunmen last month in the town of Nicolas Bravo, said state prosecutors spokesman Fidel Banuelos.

In neighboring northern Coahuila state, four police officers in the border city of Piedras Negras were kidnapped hours after the police chief was pulled from his patrol car, Piedras Negras' Public Safety Director Jose Castillo said Tuesday.

Gunmen kidnapped Piedras Negras Police Chief Rogelio Ramos on Monday morning.

Officials said the kidnappings could be related to efforts to curb corruption by militarizing the police force in Piedras Negras, across the border from Eagle Pass, Texas. The city is one of many in Mexico that have turned to the armed forces for help controlling cross-border drug trafficking.

Castillo's predecessor, army Col. Arturo Navarro, was shot and killed in April — less than three weeks after he took over the local force with the aim of purging alleged corruption.

Also Tuesday, soldiers detained 19 police officers from the wealthy Monterrey suburb of San Pedro who are suspected of links with organized crime, authorities said.

The San Pedro officers were detained Monday evening and Tuesday morning, said a spokesman for the state attorney general's office on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to give his name.

The detentions follow the June 26 capture of a Beltran Leyva cartel operative in San Pedro who police said was carrying a list with the names of San Pedro police officers.

In the Gulf coast state of Tabasco, prosecutors announced homicide charges Tuesday against five alleged Gulf cartel hit men for allegedly killing two policemen and 18 of their relatives in massacres carried out in February and May.

They had been arrested in recent days but held at a nearby military base, where a sixth man who was allegedly the leader of the group died of a heart attack while in army custody.

Tabasco state Attorney General Rafael Gonzalez refused to take questions about the death of suspect Raul Martinez, who was arrested Friday. Gonzalez said Martinez reported feeling ill Sunday and was taken to a military clinic, where he died. Gonzalez said an autopsy revealed Martinez had an enlarged heart.

The Mexican army has been accused in the past of mistreating suspects.

Jefferson's Cold Feet

Posted by Chrisbydemand On 4:04 PM 0 comments
Most weddings go off without a hitch. But every once in a while, the blessed event gets a surprise twist. This past weekend, NBA star Richard Jefferson's wedding left guests asking a big question: "Where the heck is the groom?"

According to the New York Post, Jefferson was scheduled to marry former New Jersey Nets dancer Kesha Ni'Cole Nichols. Alas, a few days before the big day, Jefferson called off the ceremony and broke up with his fiancée.

Unfortunately, nobody told a significant number of guests. Many showed up at the Mandarin Oriental in New York City expecting to see a bride, a groom, some vows, and a kiss. Instead they found that Jefferson had gone MIA. However, he did lend his friend his AMEX Black credit card and told him to treat the guests to a fun night without him.

The confusion led to some spectacular spikes in Search. Lookups on "richard jefferson wedding" surged 5,687%, and interest in the jilted bride was similarly enthusiastic. Queries on "kesha ni'cole nichols pictures" went from zip into the thousands overnight.

According to various sources from the Buzz, the wedding cost around $2 million. Next time, may we suggest city hall?

Hawks Retain Continuity, Keep Bibby And Pachulia

Posted by Chrisbydemand On 6:51 PM 0 comments
The rumors have been out there for a week or so now, but today the Hawks made it official, inking free agents Mike Bibby and Zaza Pachulia to deals that will keep them in Atlanta threads for the foreseeable future.

These moves are incredibly important for the franchise and help keep momentum going this offseason (along with the trade for Jamal Crawford and the drafting of Jeff Teague) after reaching the second round of the playoffs in 2008-09. Let's take a look at them one-by-one:

Mike Bibby - Bibby is the perfect fit for the offense Mike Woodson runs - he is a terrific outside shooter, and is the perfect antidote to make opponents think twice about doubling Joe Johnson. One of the biggest reasons for the Hawks' success (last year in particular) was an improvement in 3-point marksmanship, and with Bibby back in the fold, there is no reason to think that will drop off.

Bibby will also be a great mentor for Teague to learn under, since neither is your prototypical pass-first point guard.

There is another reason I like this signing, and I haven't really seen it talked about anywhere, so here is as good a place as any.

Bibby came to the Hawks with a chance to serve potentially two purposes - one, to make them better on the court (mission accomplished there), and two, if it didn't work out, to provide the team with an incredibly valuable expiring contract.

As it turned out, Bibby did play well for Atlanta, making it very unlikely that the team would think about trading him before his contract expired. And while it is fortunate that he excelled, it also meant that the Hawks would risk losing him in free agency for nothing. Taking that risk was well worth it - as two playoff appearances would attest - but re-signing him afterwards makes the original deal all that much sweeter.

Zaza Pachulia - Skilled big men don't just grow on trees (no matter how many times I try), and with the market for available frontcourt players dwindling, it was pretty important that the Hawks bring back a guy who is not only a legit center but one of the best offensive rebounders in the league. After the injuries to the frontcourt during the playoffs, we all saw how valuable post-depth can be, and losing Pachulia would have stung.

Fortunately that didn't happen, and Zaza now returns to be not only a valuable contributor but also a fan favorite at Philips Arena.

One of the biggest contributing factors to success in the NBA is continuity, and by keeping two players who've been a part of the team's nucleus for a combined 5 1/2 years, the Hawks have saved themselves a lot of time and effort that might have been spent trying to acclimate new (and potentially unknown) players into the departed roles.

Congrats to the Rick Sund and company for getting these deals done, and welcome back to the Highlight Factory guys!

Is Nia Long Dissing Beyonce?

Posted by Chrisbydemand On 12:23 PM 0 comments
“If you’re a singer not an actress, you should sing. If you’re a rapper, you should rap,” is what actress Nia Long told the U.K. magazine Pride.

In the July issue cover story written by Jessica Huie, the ‘Are We There Yet?’ star was also asked what she thought about Beyonce Knowles’ performance in ‘Obsessed.’

“I didn’t see ‘Obsessed,’ so I can’t comment, but it’s just not about how talented you are anymore. It’s about, ‘How much box-office revenue will this person generate?’ When you see certain people – we won’t name names – they just don’t have the skill, and no one in their team has said, ‘You need acting classes,’” Long replied.

Well okayyyy Nia!! Whether or not she names names we alllllll know she is talking about Beyonce. Even Idris Elba slipped up during an interview and told the world what he really thought of Beyonce’s acting.

It must be something in the water lately. First The Game is dissing Bey and now Nia???

Analyst expects 20% game sales slide in June

Posted by Chrisbydemand On 7:58 AM 0 comments
While year-over-year US retail software sales have been down sharply in recent months, analysts have expressed only mild concern, saying the problem is not this year's crop of titles, but last year's. The idea is that sales have been down not because the industry is softening, but because it's having to compete against a first half of 2008 that saw mega-blockbuster releases like Grand Theft Auto 4, Mario Kart Wii, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

The industry's rope-a-dope strategy may not be working...

With the industry-tracking NPD Group set to release its sales for June 2009 next week, one analyst is starting to rethink that notion. Pacific Crest Securities' Evan Wilson sent an NPD preview note to investors this week in which he estimated software sales for the month to be down 20 percent year-over-year to $700 million.

"Our most recent checks have indicated that the relative health that we have seen may not have continued into June," Wilson said. "Our contacts indicate that sales in the important 'school's out' period, especially in the last two weeks of June, were disappointing and represented a deviation in the early-year trend. While it is too early to call a long-term trend, we have taken a more conservative view of new and catalog products in our June NPD forecast. If the data back up our checks, it may be time to reassess the degree to which videogames really are 'recession proof.'"

While tough comparisons against last year's slate of titles have been blamed for prior months' decreases, Wilson blamed his projected June slowdown on sluggish reception for some of the month's biggest releases and slipping consumer confidence. Of the games to debut during the month, Wilson pegged Fight Night Round 4, Prototype, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10, and Ghostbusters as the biggest of the bunch. The analyst estimated sales of 1.1 million for Fight Night across platforms, with Prototype not too far behind at 750,000.

"Prototype started well, especially in competition with Infamous," Wilson said, "but neither game appears to have much of a tail."

Last week, the boxing world lost one of its greatest ambassadors in Alexis Arguello. In a sport mired in corruption and cruelty, Arguello always stood out as a gentle soul who positively touched the lives of anyone he came in contact with. In this week’s column, I take a look back at the legendary career and life of “The Explosive Thin Man,” Alexis Arguello.

Growing Pains

Like many fighters from Latin America, Alexis Arguello was thrown to the wolves early and forced to learn the sweet science on the job. After turning pro at a mere 16 years old in 1968, he was promptly blasted out in one round in his professional debut. 3 fights later, Arguello was again on the losing end, dropping a 6 round points decision.

But the young pugilist remained diligent, and racked off a record of 33-1 over the next 6 years, which earned Arguello his first title shot against WBA featherweight champ Ernesto Marcel in February 1974. The aged champ proved too wily for the still learning Arguello, who was outfoxed to a unanimous decision loss. Undaunted, Alexis went right back to work and scored 4 wins (3 by knockout) in the same year, which earned him another shot in November for the WBA title, as Marcel had retired.

The man standing in his way this time was Ruben Olivares, a featherweight warrior and future hall of famer with a record of 77-4-1. Arguello again looked to be in trouble as Olivares jumped out to an early lead behind his hard counterpunching on the inside. However, Arguello never wavered in stalking Olivares, and ended the Mexican’s night with 2 knockdowns courtesy of a crushing left hook and right uppercut in the 13th round. For the first time, Alexis Arguello was now a world champion. From 1974-1977, Alexis Arguello lived up to his nickname of El Flaco Explosivo (The Explosive Thin Man). He defended his featherweight title 4 times, winning all by knockout. Additionally, he went 12-0 in exhibition bouts.

By 1978, Arguello had outgrown featherweight, and moved up to super featherweight (130 lbs) to challenge dangerous WBC champ Alfredo Escalera.

The fight was highly anticipated, particularly in Latin America, as Arguello and Escalera were Nicaraguan and Puerto Rican respectively. The bout was held in Escalera’s backyard (Bayamon, PR), and would go on to be nicknamed The Bloody Battle of Bayamon.

The first half of the bout was competitive, with both men stunning each other with combinations. But Arguello proved to be the harder puncher, and was taking a heavier physical toll from Escalera when the two combatants went to war. After 10 career-shortening rounds, Escalera had a broken nose, and severe, dripping cuts in his mouth and over his eyes. The battered champ staged a comeback in the 11th and 12th, but was ultimately TKO’d after the referee stopped the bout due to Escalera’s injuries. At 130, Arguello solidified himself as one of the top 3 fighters all time at that weight. Among his KO victims were Bobby Chacon, Rafael “Bazooka” Limon, and Alfredo Escalera in a bruising rematch, where Arguello scored the knockout after receiving face lacerations that required plastic surgery.

In 1981, Alexis moved up to his 3rd weight class to challenge Jim Watt for the WBC lightweight title. Arguello took the crown by a rare 15 round decision, and became the 2nd Latin American and 6th overall fighter to win world titles in 3 weight classes. With Roberto Duran gone from the division, Arguello struggled to find elite, high profile opponents to test his skills.

But in his first defense, the Nicaraguan had a memorable battle with well-known, undefeated American prospect Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini. The fight was a war from the opening bell. Although he was clearly outgunned, Mancini refused to give up until a crushing straight right separated him from his senses in round 14. The post-fight interview was one of Arguello’s defining moments, as the world witnessed him consoling a heartbroken Mancini and promising to do everything in his power to help his career going forward. After making 3 more defenses, Alexis Arguello again focused on achieving history by ascending to a higher weight class in junior welterweight, and becoming the first man to win world titles in 4 weight classes. But there was one man who stood in his way…Aaron Pryor.

Waging War With Pryor

Since Aaron Pryor only held the WBA version of the 140 pound championship, Arguello could’ve easily selected a safe opponent to win another belt. But the Explosive Thin Man recognized that Pryor was considered the man in that division, and wanted to achieve history against the best fighter possible.

The two met in 1982 at the Orange Bowl in Miami. The aggressive Pryor immediately pounced on Arguello, bullying the challenger around and abusing him with an endless barrage of punches. Arguello fired back, but in his 4th weight class, he found his normal firepower only made Pryor angrier, and prompted the underrated champ to apply even more pressure.

By the championship rounds, a bloody and fading Arguello was behind on the scorecards. It looked bleak until Arugello viciously snapped back Pryor’s head with his trademark straight right. For the first time, Pryor was visibly stunned and slowed down his assault. The crowd erupted even louder for Arguello, the sentimental favorite. The round ended before Arguello could adequately capitalize, and it appeared that the Nicaraguan had a shot to the take the bout in the final 2 rounds.

However, Pryor trainer Panama Lewis was seen asking his corner team to give him a black bottle that was “mixed” with an unknown substance. Corners are only allowed to use water, and the bottle’s substance reinvigorated Pryor, who blazed out at the start of the 14th the same way he did in round 1. A startled Arugello was hurt badly early in the round, and was rendered helpless against the ropes as Pryor rained down flush shot after flush shot until the referee stopped the contest. The classic bout was mired by the black bottle controversy, and both men agreed to a rematch the following year. Having fought in over 70 bouts and competing in his 4th weight class, Alexis Arguello was no match for a prime Aaron Pryor. The rematch was much more lopsided although Arguello had his moments. In the 10th, Arguello was again hurt against the ropes and decided to stay down after a knockdown.

He would fight just 4 more fights over the next 12 years before retiring for good in 1995.

The Final Round

Starting in the 80s, Arguello became involved in the politics of his native Nicaragua. He first fought in the guerrilla war against the Sandinista National Liberation Front before joining them in 2004 to run for vice-mayor of Managua. He won the election, and just last year became mayor of Managua after securing 51% of the vote.

Despite the appearance of an easy going man, Alexis Arguello struggled with drug addiction and depression. In a candid Sports Illustrated interview, the boxing legend verified that he contemplated suicide. Reports would occasionally come out of Nicaragua of Arguello disappearing for weeks on end, and various occurrences of drug relapse.

Recently, there had been questions about Arguello’s close mayoral win, with some accusing there was a corruption scandal. While Arguello remained extremely popular in his homeland, he struggled to deal with the pressures of politics and his own personal demons.

On July 1, 2009, Alexis Arguello shot himself through the heart. He was 57 years old.

The tragic news shocked the boxing world. Friends such as Roberto Duran just sobbed at the news, reflecting the bond he shared with his fellow all time great.

Although the end was filled with pain and sorrow, Alexis Arguello made millions of people happy throughout his tenured career as a boxer. In death, he remains a revered figure in his homeland, and an example of class and dignity to upcoming fighters.

Rest in peace, champ.

Singer and producer The Dream says he has no immediate plans to talk to Lil Wayne, who is expecting a baby with Nivea – who is The Dream’s ex-wife. It was reported earlier this year that the Lollipop rapper had impregnated Nivea, who already has three children from her marriage to The Dream.

However, the Rockin That Thang singer – who is engaged to singer Christina Milian – says he won’t need to have words with Weezy about the rapper’s relationship with Nivea – unless the pair decides to marry.

“I’ve never met him,” The Dream says of Lil Wayne. “We’re somewhere in the grey area I guess, coz we haven’t had the chance to talk. But I wish him and Nivea the best. If marriage comes up then we’ll definitely need to have a conversation. But right now we don’t need to, coz even though she’s pregnant, there’s no real commitment between them, to the point where we’d need to have a conversation.”

The status of Lil Wayne’s relationship with Nivea is still unclear, and the rapper is also expecting a child with actress Lauren London.

NBA 2K10: Ten Years of NBA 2K

Posted by Chrisbydemand On 4:40 PM 0 comments

It's hard to believe that this year marks the ten year anniversary of the Dreamcast. I remember giddily anticipating the 9.9.99 release of what would be Sega's last hardware entry, if for no other reason than the release of NFL 2K, which still remains one of the most incredible sports games of all time. However, tucked just behind NFL 2K's September 1999 release was another sports game from the folks at Visual Concepts--NBA 2K, released in November of that year--which did nearly as much for basketball as its football brethren did for pigskin. Today, 2K announced a special anniversary edition version of its upcoming NBA 2K10--which, obviously, is the tenth game in the famed basketball series. To coincide with the announcement, we spoke with 2K's Vice President of Sports Development Jeff Thomas to get his thoughts on the history of the series, as well as what fans can expect from the limited edition version of 2K10.

GameSpot: This being the tenth anniversary of the NBA 2K series, let's take it back to the beginning. What do you remember about the development of NBA 2K?

Jeff Thomas: It was HARD! No, kidding aside, I remember being amazed at the power of the Dreamcast and what it was capable of doing. This was the start of it all.

GS: What was building the team like? This being the first basketball game you made, how much "NBA 101" was required in order to get the team up to speed?

JT: Building any development team is difficult but we were lucky to get people that had actual college basketball experience. I still hear the stories about taking "so and so" to the rim at the Purdue campus!

GS: What was the hardest thing to get right about the sport? What aspect of the game came easiest to you during development?

JT: The hardest thing about making any sports title is "the feel" . A game just has to feel right and that is a very difficult thing to accomplish. As far as easy goes, I am still waiting for that!

GS: At the time, Visual Concepts was riding high from the buzz surrounding NFL 2K's release with the launch of the Dreamcast. Were you worried that the NBA game would be lost by comparison?

JT: Of course NFL was in the limelight because it was the first one completed and with the popularity of football in this country, it was no doubt going to get the buzz. But we always knew that NBA was going to be an incredible game as well. All of the same technology that was driving NFL 2K was also driving NBA, and with the amount of drive the NBA team has it was only a matter of time before it ruled the NBA market.

GS: Leading up to the debut game's release in 1999, what was the atmosphere like at Visual Concepts? Was it competitive between the NFL and NBA teams? Friendly? Or was everyone just sort of buckled down and trying to get their product finished?

JT: Competition was always very high here at VC, but not between the NFL and NBA teams but between us and the competing products. The reason we have such a great game today is because of the driving force needed to beat the big company down the road. NBA 2K10 will launch alongside the standard release. Titled NBA 2K10: Anniversary Edition, this special release is to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the NBA 2K franchise.

The Anniversary Edition will reportedly retail for $99.99 when it launches later this fall. What will you get for the 40-dollar price hike? For starters, you'll of course get your own copy of NBA 2K10. In addition, you'll also get a 2K Sports locker that can hold up to 20 games inside. And yes, it comes with a padlock for security's sake. You'll also get a 3" figurine of Kobe Bryant designed by McFarlane Toys, a 16" x 36" Kobe Bryant poster, a commemorative anniversary DVD that runs through ten years worth of past cover athletes, and access to the Gold Room which is the NBA 2K10 VIP online lobby. There are only 30,000 copies of the NBA 2K10: Anniversary Edition being made, so fans who want to get their hands on one should head out to stores early. Ten lucky fans will win an autographed Kobe Bryant fine-art print, designed by Shepard Fairey's Studio Number One. The print will be hidden in the 2K Sports locker.

NBA 2K10: Anniversary Edition is scheduled to launch alongside the standard edition of NBA 2K10 later this fall and will retail for $99.99.

Indian Court Overturns Gay Sex Ban

Posted by Chrisbydemand On 7:36 AM 0 comments
In a landmark ruling Thursday that could usher in an era of greater freedom for gay men and lesbians in India, New Delhi’s highest court decriminalized homosexuality. “The inclusiveness that Indian society traditionally displayed, literally in every aspect of life, is manifest in recognizing a role in society for everyone,” judges of the Delhi High Court wrote in a 105-page decision, India’s first to directly address rights for gay men and lesbians. “Those perceived by the majority as ‘deviants’ or ‘different’ are not on that score excluded or ostracized,” the decision said.

Homosexuality has been illegal in India since 1861, when British rulers codified a law prohibiting “carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal.” The law, known as Section 377 of India’s penal code, has long been viewed as an archaic holdover from colonialism by its detractors.

“Clearly, we are all thrilled,” said Anjali Gopalan, the executive director and founder of the Naz Foundation, an AIDS awareness group that sued to have Section 377 changed. “It is a first major step,” she said during a news conference in Delhi, but “there are many more battles.”

Thursday’s decision applies only in the territory of India’s capital city, but it is likely to force India’s government either to appeal the decision to the Supreme Court, or change the law nationwide, lawyers and advocates said.

Outside the hall where the Naz Foundation news conference was held, dozens of young men and women gathered to celebrate, along with a group of hijras, men who dress and act like women who classify themselves as belonging to neither gender. “It is a victory of human rights, not just of gay rights,” said one 22-year-old man who only identified himself as Manish.

Gay men and women have rarely been prosecuted under Section 377 in India in modern times, but it has been used to harass, blackmail and jail people.

Britain legalized homosexuality in England and Wales in 1967, but many of its former colonies, including Singapore, Zimbabwe and Malaysia, still retain strict laws against same-sex relations.

India’s family-oriented society is generally unwelcoming of homosexuality except in the most cosmopolitan circles. It is not uncommon for gay men and women to marry heterosexuals and have families, while carrying on secret relationships with members of the same sex.

In their decision, Chief Justice A. P. Shah and Justice S. Muralidhar declared Section 377, as it pertains to consensual sex among people above the age of 18, in violation of important parts of India’s Constitution. “Consensual sex amongst adults is legal, which includes even gay sex and sex among the same sexes,” they said.

The old law violates Article 14 of the Constitution, which guarantees all people “equality before the law;” Article 15, which prohibits discrimination “on grounds of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth;” and Article 21, which guarantees “protection of life and personal liberty,” they said.

Acceptance of homosexuality has thawed somewhat in recent years in some urban areas. Gay pride parades in Indian cities last weekend attracted thousands of marchers, and several recent Bollywood movies, like Dostana, have included gay themes and characters, often played by Bollywood’s biggest heterosexual stars.

Still, the decision was condemned from many corners in India. “This is wrong,” said Maulana Abdul Khaliq Madrasi, a vice chancellor of Dar ul-Uloom, the main university for Islamic education in India. The decision bring Western culture to India, he said, will “corrupt Indian boys and girls.”

The High Court decision should be overturned, said Murli Manohar Joshi, the leader of the main opposition Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party. “The High Court can not decide all things,” he said.

The change comes after a decade-long, broad-based campaign organized by gay rights advocates, authors, celebrities, lawyers and AIDS awareness groups from around the world. India has one of the world’s largest populations of people with AIDS, and Section 377 was view by many advocates as a hurdle to education about safer sex.

Now that the High Court has ruled against Section 377, some say the next step is a change in the way that society views gay people. “The real problem is still the stigma attached,” especially outside big cities, said Ritu Dalmia, one of India’s best-known chefs, who lives with her girlfriend in Delhi.

Change particularly needs to happen in rural India, she said in an e-mail interview Thursday afternoon. “I have met women who were forced to sleep with men so that they could be ‘cured’ of homosexuality,” she said.

“Today is a historical moment where at least some tiny steps have been taken, but there is still a very, very long road ahead,” she said.

Jermaine Jackson: 'I wish it was me'

Jermaine Jackson says he would like to see Neverland Ranch as his brother Michael's final resting place.

In an interview broadcast Thursday on NBC's "Today" show, Jermaine Jackson also said he wishes he had died instead of his younger brother, and that Michael was "a gift from Allah."

"He went too soon. I don't know how people are going to take this, but I wish it was me," Jermaine Jackson said.

When asked why he felt that way, Jermaine Jackson said he always felt that he was Michael's "backbone."

"I wanted to be there for him. I was there and he was sort of like molded. Things he couldn't say, I would say them. During the trials, during everything ..."

Jermaine Jackson said that when he rushed to UCLA Medical Center last Thursday, where the 50-year-old pop singer was pronounced dead, "I wanted to see Michael, and I wanted to see my brother, and see him there lifeless and breathless was very emotional for me, but I held myself together, because I know he's very much alive."

"His spirit is, and that was just a shell, but I kissed him on his forehead and I hugged him, and I touched him and I said, 'Michael, I'll never leave you. You'll never leave me.'"

On Wednesday, Jackson family spokesman Ken Sunshine said a public memorial was in the works but it wouldn't be held at Neverland.

A person familiar with the situation told the AP that permits for a burial at the sprawling Santa Barbara, Calif., estate could not be arranged in time. The person was not authorized to speak for the family and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Jackson said Neverland was Michael's home.

"He created this. Why wouldn't he be here? I feel his presence."

Oscar-winning actor Karl Malden dead at 97

Karl Malden, the Academy Award-winning actor whose intelligent characterizations on stage, screen and television made him a star despite his plain looks, died Wednesday, his family said. He was 97.

Malden died of natural causes surrounded by his family at his Brentwood home, they told the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. He served as the academy's president from 1989-92.

"Karl lived a rich, full life," Academy president Sid Ganis said. "He has the greatest and most loving family; a career that has spanned the spectrum of the arts from theater to film and television, to some very famous commercial work."

While he tackled a variety of characters over the years, he was often seen in working-class garb or military uniform. His authenticity in grittier roles came naturally: He was the son of a Czech mother and a Serbian father, and worked for a time in the steel mills of Gary, Ind., after dropping out of college.

Malden said he got his celebrated bulbous nose when he broke it a couple of times playing basketball or football, joking that he was "the only actor in Hollywood whose nose qualifies him for handicapped parking." He liked to say he had "an open-hearth face."

Malden won a supporting actor Oscar in 1951 for his role as Blanche DuBois' naive suitor Mitch in "A Streetcar Named Desire" — a role he also played on Broadway.

He was nominated again as best supporting actor in 1954 for his performance as Father Corrigan, a fearless, friend-of-the-workingman priest in "On the Waterfront." In both movies, he costarred with Marlon Brando.

"When you worked with him, he was the character," said Eva Marie Saint, who garnered a supporting actress Oscar for her role in "Waterfront." "He was the consummate actor and he loved acting. He was dear and smart. Whatever he did he enjoyed life."

Among his other memorable roles were: "Birdman of Alcatraz" opposite Burt Lancaster; "I Confess" with Montgomery Clift; "How the West Was Won;" and "The Cincinnati Kid" opposite Steve McQueen and Edward G. Robinson.

His more than 50 credits included "Patton," in which he played Gen. Omar Bradley, "Pollyanna," "Fear Strikes Out," "The Sting II," "Bombers B-52," "Cheyenne Autumn," and "All Fall Down."

One of his most controversial films was "Baby Doll" in 1956, in which he played a dullard husband whose child bride is exploited by a businessman. It was condemned by the Catholic Legion of Decency for what was termed its "carnal suggestiveness." The story was by "Streetcar" author Tennessee Williams.

Malden gained perhaps his greatest fame as Lt. Mike Stone in the 1970s television show "The Streets of San Francisco," in which Michael Douglas played the veteran detective's junior partner.

Douglas was 28 when he earned his first major break on the detective series with Malden, who was 60. Douglas saluted Malden last month as a key mentor when the older actor received the American Film Institute's Lifetime Achievement Award, an event to be televised July 19 on the TV Land channel.

"He was fantastic. He just had a tremendous discipline, tremendous ethics," Douglas told AP Television News about a month before the ceremony. "He insisted that next's week's script would be there when we were shooting that week's script. Every time between setups, between breaks, we'd go in the trailer and run lines for the next's week's show. That's the kind of discipline, training I got from Karl."

In the '70s, Malden gained a lucrative 21-year sideline and a place in pop culture with his "Don't leave home without them" ads for American Express travelers checks.

"The Streets of San Francisco" earned him five Emmy nominations. He won one for his role as a murder victim's father out to bring his former son-in-law to justice in the 1985 miniseries "Fatal Vision." He and Saint played husband and wife.

Malden played Barbra Streisand's stepfather in the 1987 film "Nuts;" Adm. Elmo Zumwalt Jr. in the 1988 TV film "My Father, My Son;" and Leon Klinghoffer, the cruise ship passenger murdered by terrorists in 1985, in the 1989 TV film "The Hijacking of the Achille Lauro."

He acted sparingly in recent years, appearing in 2000 in a small role on TV's "The West Wing."

In 2004, Malden received the Screen Actors Guild's Lifetime Achievement Award, telling the group in his acceptance speech that "this is the peak for me." He served on the acting union's national board from 1963-72.

"We will remember the many indelible characters he created, and his screen legacy will continue to move us, educate us and enrich our lives," SAG president Alan Rosenberg said Wednesday.

Malden first gained prominence on Broadway in the late 1930s, making his debut in "Golden Boy" by Clifford Odets. It was during this time that he met Elia Kazan, who later was to direct him in "Streetcar" and "Waterfront."

He steadily gained more prominent roles, with time out for service in the Army in World War II (and a role in an Army show, "Winged Victory.")

"A Streetcar Named Desire" opened on Broadway in 1947 and went on to win the Pulitzer Prize and New York Drama Critics Circle awards. Brando's breakthrough performance might have gotten most of the attention, but Malden did not want for praise. Once critic called him "one of the ablest young actors extant."

Among his other stage appearances were "Key Largo," "Winged Victory," Arthur Miller's "All My Sons," "The Desperate Hours," and "The Egghead."

Malden was known for his meticulous preparation, studying a script carefully long before he stepped into his role.

"I not only figure out my own interpretation of the role, but try to guess other approaches that the director might like. I prepare them, too," he said in a 1962 Associated Press interview. "That way, I can switch in the middle of a scene with no sweat."

"There's no such thing as an easy job, not if you do it right," he added.

He was born Mladen Sekulovich in Chicago on March 22, 1912. Malden regretted that in order to become an actor he had to change his name. He insisted that Fred Gwynne's character in "On the Waterfront" be named Sekulovich to honor his heritage.

The family moved to Gary, Ind., when he was small. He quit his steel job 1934 to study acting at Chicago's Goodman Theatre "because I wasn't getting anywhere in the mills," he recalled.

"When I told my father, he said, `Are you crazy? You want to give up a good job in the middle of the Depression?' Thank god for my mother. She said to give it a try."

In 2005, the U.S. Postal Service honored Malden by naming the post office in Brentwood to honor his achievement in film and his contributions to the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee, which meets to discuss ideas for stamp designs.

Malden helped create the "Legends of Hollywood" stamp series that has featured Marilyn Monroe, James Dean and Gary Cooper, and another celebrating Hollywood's behind-the-scenes workers.

"As a kid, all the letters that would come from the old country, he would see the stamps and they always intrigued him," said David Failor, executive director of stamp services for the Postal Service. "He was such a regular guy."

Malden and his wife, Mona, a fellow acting student at the Goodman, had one of Hollywood's longest marriages, having celebrated their 70th anniversary in December.

"That was sort of the last goodbye," said Saint, who attended a party in the couple's honor. "His wish was, `After I die, I don't want you to do anything but have a party.' So another party is coming up."

Besides his wife, Malden is survived by daughters Mila and Cara, his sons-in-law, three granddaughters, and four great grandchildren.
